A Brief Overview of Houston Texas for Visitors Houston is one of the largest cities around. In fact, it's the fourth largest city in the entire United States. Although some have found the city a bit unwieldy, with a map in hand, you can navigate the city fairly easily. If you've never been to Houston before, or even if you have, there are many fascinating neighborhoods to explore, with funky shops, unique restaurants, entertaining bars and nightclubs, world-class museums, and more... All tucked into a truly Texas-sized city. Houston hasn't always been the sprawling metropolis it is today. In fact, it spent the first century or so of its existence as a sleepy cattle town. When oil was discovered in 1901, though, that all changed. Folks looking to make a quick buck started looking for the black gold, and many enjoyed that famed Texas wealth. Oil prices soared through the 1980's, when they finally busted. Fortunately, although oil was important to the city's economy, there were other sectors, including shipping, health care and high tech, that helped keep the city afloat. Today Houston continues to grow, with new developments springing up all the time, while the downtown area is being improved to make it more appealing for locals and visitors. There's certainly no lack of things to do in Houston. In fact, you might be pleasantly surprised at just how varied the city and its entertainment is.Combine that with its friendly locals, and any visit to Houston - whether for pleasure or business - is sure to be pleasant and unforgettable. A visit to one or more of the outstanding museums in Houston would likely make your entire trip worthwhile, including the Holocaust Museum and the Museum of Health and Medical Science. If you're a golfer, you're in luck because there are over 100 courses in the Houston area. If you're in the area in February, it'd behoove you (pun intended, lol) to see the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, allowing you to experience true Texas culture. There are also many other festivals during the year that are well worth your time, including the Juneteenth Festival around June 19. There's also great theater, ballet, opera, a symphony orchestra and more to enjoy. Houston is a Texas-sized city with a big heart. There are friendly residents who will help you feel right at home, or at least give directions if you get a bit turned around. There are numerous businesses and a surprisingly good cultural life. With the improvements to downtown, it's becoming a city that residents can be proud of and visitors are sure to enjoy. |
